Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the increasing number of illegal landings at European borders

The European Parliament,

 having regard to the Commission communication on a ‘New Pact on Migration and Asylum’,

 having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas, according to data from Frontex released on 13 June 2022, 86 420 migrants irregularly crossed the EU’s external borders between January and May, a rise of 82% in respect of the same period last year;

B. whereas, according to data from the Italian Ministry of the Interior released on 13 June 2022, there were 21 862 landings of migrants in the first six months of 2022, as opposed to 5 585 in the same period of 2020, an increase of 291%;

1. Urges the Commission to take effective action to combat illegal immigration by concluding agreements with the countries on the southern shore of the Mediterranean;

2. Urges the Commission to go back to the negotiating table for a new pact on migration and asylum as soon as possible, paying particular attention to the needs of each Member State;

3. Calls on the Commission to move beyond the ‘first country of entry’ policy and towards a mechanism benefiting the Med5 countries, which have always borne the brunt of the high socio-economic costs of migration.
